The September issue has arrived

What Baby Boomer girl doesn't remember the excitement during the fifties and sixties, when the new Fall/Winter or Spring/Summer Eaton's and Simpson's catalogues arrived? Growing up in a small town where we were lucky to make it to Peterborough a couple of times a year, those thick, delicious catalogues offered glimpses of clothes, shoes, jewelry and toys most of couldn't afford but dreamed of possessing. We would endlessly pore over the pages of the latest fashions, planning wardrobes we would never own, but it was fun to fantasize. My girlfriends…

The fashion fascists are laughing at us

Whoever those fashion fascists are who tell us each season what is hot and what's not, I'm on to their cruel joke. You know what I'm talking about. This season they told us rompers were all the rage and showed us endless pictures of anorexic teenage girls wearing them in all the fashion mags. I nearly coughed up my Geritol when I saw that one. Can you imagine an average woman with an average body strutting around in rompers? Not to mention having to get completely undressed to go to…

Buy it now. Hot off the press, literally!

When I opened this morning's Globe and Mail (Saturday, July 4, 2015) and started browsing the various sections, my heart lifted when I saw the full-page picture of the intelligent and frankly-spoken Iris Apfel on the cover of Globe Style. I've long been an admirer of the ninety-three-year-old's fashion sensibilities and overall opinions. (Click here for previous blog postings: Iris Rocks.) This week's articles tickled my fancy like no other in a while. For those of you who care about how you look and have even a passing interest in…

Caitlyn Jenner is a poor example of womanhood

Caitlyn Jenner's change of gender from a man known as Bruce to a woman is a subject just too ripe for comment to ignore. Let me state up front that my views on LGBT issues are extremely liberal. I was one of those individuals born thoroughly female and heterosexual so I can only imagine how painful and confusing it must be for those who are born with a more ambiguous gender identity. When I was in my early twenties I read the story of Christine Jorgensen, the Danish man who…

Iris rocks!

The name Iris Apfel has been mentioned in previous blogs and if I were allowed only one word to describe the ninety-three-year-old style icon it would be inspiring. Apfel is the subject of a recent documentary as part of the Hot Docs series being shown at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto. Apfel describes herself as a geriatric starlet. The documentary about her late-life celebrity status was made by filmmaker Albert Maysles who died recently at the age of eighty-eight. Iris Apfel's parents were originally in the fabric business and after…

Hooked on Timmie’s crack tea

The six-hour drive to visit my parents always starts with a fuel stop at Tim Horton's about five minutes from my home. There, I fill up with an extra-large steeped tea and that lasts me for about three hours of the trip. I have to wait about thirty minutes for it to cool enough that I can drink it and by then I'm sailing past Pickering on the 401. I keep sticking my finger in the hole in the lid until it reaches an acceptably drinkable temperature. Then, the sipping…
