Last week a friend and I went to see American Hustle. The bushel of theatre popcorn was wonderful – warm with just the right amount of salt and crunch. The gallon of Diet Coke I slurped from the holder in the arm of my chair was perfection. The seats were very comfortable. And the movie was a lot of fun with plenty of plot twists that had me guessing who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. The trickery reminded me a lot of “The Sting” with Robert Redford and Paul Newman many years ago. I definitely think it is worthy of an Academy Award nomination for its clever script and all the other factors that generate the more boring awards. I do have a problem, however, with Amy Adams being nominated for Best Actress in a leading role for delivering what seemed to me to be the worst fake English accent ever. Or maybe it was intended to sound fake. Is that good acting or bad acting? It certainly hurt my ears every time she employed it. The chemistry between her and Bradley Cooper was intense and palpable but how much acting does that require? Who wouldn’t melt when getting up close to Bradley Cooper! And Jennifer Lawrence was incredible as the wife of Christian Bale’s character. Two thumbs up from this Boomer Broad.
I agree wholeheartedly – Jennifer Lawrence was much more deserving of the Oscar nod than Amy Adams. I found Amy’s character to be unconvincing and yes, worst British accent ever- I assume the Academy was distracted by her breasts. While the costume designer thought they deserved prime billing in every scene, I got bored of her plunging necklines. I definitely think Dallas Buyer’s Club deserved its accolades much more than this film which was frivolous in comparison.
So nice to know we’re “on the same page”. Thanks.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I have been meaning to see this movie and now I have an additional incentive!
